In principle,. I always stay in the same hotel in Zamalek whenever I am in Cairo,, since it is kind of like “home away from home”, but exceptionally I stayed in a French boutiqze hotel downtown, and overheard the other guests complaining about the scandalous “pet shop” next to AUC, so I went to take a look. they were right. There were two nearly starving Dalmatian dogs on short metal leashes and a cat haging from the ceiling in a bird cage with no bottom, also starving and suffering frim diarrhea. I phoned Mona al Khalil immediately and said “Send a team to buy these animals immediately. I will pay for them. They must be taken to our shelter or theiy will die. And then send our lawyer, Ahmed, to close this shameful pet shop down. Af for the cat, please prepare him for travel and I will come back to collect him in a few months. His name will be Soufiane.”
Shortly before this, an Algerian Minister had showed up in my office requesting a meeting with the High Commissoner Guetrres. He told me his name, and I asked him to rep-at it three times. Finally I said “Minister, I am neither deaf nor dumb, but I have never before heard such a beautiful name – which is more like a poem. I already have five cats, but if i ever take another one, I will name him after you.” The Minister was NOT offended. I waited six months to collect Soufiane – who never did to to the shelter but rather was taken care of by Zahra in her home. In actual fact, this cat had no vocal cords left, so he did not speak at all, and no vet could understand why. In any case, Soufiane was quite fine once he got to my apartment and knew that he was safe forever. Eveni if he had no voice, he knew how tom ake his needs met.
When this particular Algerian Minister returned to Geneva, I invited him to my apartment for dinner – so that he cold meet the other “Soufiane”. He said “But his is not a cat!! He is a PASHA!!” And thus I added “Pasha” to his name.
His very favorite food was … asparagus.
