A final attempt to clarify my posting of the cartoon

6 Jul

Because this unintentional posting of an anti-semitic cartoon has attracted such attention to my blog, and elicited a stream of venomous comments, I want to explain my mistake one last time. I do this without trying to excuse the carelessness involved, although I would point out that I removed the cartoon as soon as I became aware of its real content.

Even now I needed a magnifying glass to identify the anti-semitic character of the dog. My vision (at 80) is pretty good, but not good enough. It looked like a helmet to me, and the main visible symbol on the dog was the USA midriff covering. I found the cartoon through a Google image search on the page devoted to the International Criminal Court. Almost all the images there were about the Court or justice, and I assumed that this blindfolded goddess of justice was being led around by the USA. I am quite sure this cartoon would never have been allowed on the Google page if its true content had been realized, and it should be removed. Without a special effort, which admittedly I did not make, this true content is easy to overlook, and even when the initial objection to the cartoon was brought to my attention, and I looked at it, I did not appreciate the objectionable character of what was intended to be communicated.

Anyone who knows you and who is aware of a lifetime of speaking out on many issues will know that your explanation is from the heart, reasonable and understandable. Those with an ax to grind, probably from other disagreements, will jump on this as an excuse to citicize you. As someone who knows you well, I would encourage to let it go. You explained what happened. Enough said. Next…

Let go of what, John ?!

Call it as it is – another self-hating Jew who takes it out on the Jewish homeland, Israel.

The first Americans wanted Hebrew to be the country’s mother tongue, because Hebrew was the language in which the old testimony was written – now, if you please note: that was BEFORE 67, and even 48.
So the connection is more profound by far then what Richard chooses to comprehend.

Richard – stop hating yourself, and stop using hate drawings to express your inner truth !! Instead of being a sad caricature yourself – come to Israel, come home.
It will help you grow up, and you’ll become in touch with reality.

Without the re-creation of temporal Israel from the 3000 year old Bible stories, Armageddon would not be possible and in view.

Armageddon was derived from Har Mediggo that was located in the Roman Province of Palestine 2000 years ago. Today, Har Mediggo/Armageddon is located in Israel.

You are right. This has very, very deep roots.

And I saw three unclean spirits like frogs come out of the mouth of the dragon, and out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet.
For they are the spirits of devils, working miracles, which go forth unto the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty.
Behold, I come as a thief. Blessed is he that watches, and keeps his garments, lest he walk naked, and they see his shame.
And he gathered them together into a place called in the Hebrew tongue Armageddon. Revelation 16

This was written 600 years before the 3rd arm of man made, traditional, ritual religions to the God of Abraham, Islam, appeared in the earth, after Christianity and Judaism.

The 3 unclean spirits, the 3 devils and the false prophet are very active in all 3 branches of religions to the Almighty God of Abraham Today.

Joe: Why can’t you accept that this was just a mistake? Why is it that any time anyone criticises Israel for their brutality they are a “self hating Jew” or an anti-semite? Isn’t it nice to resort to automatic labels instead of being reasonable? Much more self-infantilising and pleasant that way.

When Israel is continually keeping a population trapped in an area smaller than the Isle of Wight where 80% plus of people there have to receive international food aid to survive, the unemployment rate is absurdly high, access to water, medicine, children’s toys, electricity, food and sanitation is kept to degrading and punitively low standards as a matter of Israeli policy, isn;t to be expected that people speak out?

When people who owned property in what was mandate Palestine and had to flee and live in refugee camps afforded no rights by their neglectful “brothers” in Lebanon and refused any right to receive compensation by Israel, are you surprised that there is so much anger?

Can you summon up anything more original than playing the race card at the first opportunity?

Israel has been behaving disgracefully for a very long time (so has Hamas), and while all of us condemn anti-semitism, it would be ridiculous to expect that an intelligent man like Richard would be so masochistic as to do this on purpose. I accept his explanation, it makes sense, your response is .

Sorry, but the internet never forgets. You can apologize a million times, but it won’t help.

      • Richard July 8, 2011 at 10:50 am #

The Cartoon is honest, and honestly depicted the involvement of both the US, and Israel in disruptive behavior across the globe. Right now Israel is again confiscating land, deporting peace activists etc., and this all with the support of the US, and AIPAC who we all know supports the US government, and is backed by greedy companies, banks etc. I live in this primitive, barbarian, violent, narcissistic country, bent on it’s own destruction, and welcome people who can speak the truth of what Israel, and the US is doing to our world, and the utter chaos, and poverty they are spreading across the globe.

Richard you are a coward for removing this, and dishonest in apologizing, and only doing it to protect your name.

Antisemitism is “crap”, and is used to the advantage of greedy, unscrupulous individuals, and governments/companies to further their political/capitalist destruction.

Richard I hope you sleep well knowing that you have just justified their goals.

With this latest experience, I would suppose Richard Falk could relate to Judge Richard Goldstone more than ever before.

  4. jeffbracey July 7, 2011 at 1:47 am #

I have followed Richard Falk’s comments through the years and sad to say he is a wilful bigot where Israel is concerned. An individual who takes such a Nelsonian view of Jewish history and suffering, and is incapable of reading facts fairly, does little to support the progress of peace efforts in the Middle East.
The actions of the power brokers in the Arab world are now beginning to pay the price for their corrupt and selfish leadership and the ordinary people are finally realising the consequences of their evil behaviour. It’s just a shame that the old bombast Falk doesn’t!

  5. Bev Berm July 7, 2011 at 4:06 am #

If you google the author of the cartoon, you will find that it is Emad Hajjaj from Mahjoob.com. Born in Ramallah, very obviously anti-Jew and anti-Israel. A site full of vile content.

    • jacob July 7, 2011 at 4:26 pm #

very smart comment. Easy to blame others but himself. He should have done his homwork before posting it.

I am quite sure this cartoon would never have been allowed on the Google page if its true content had been realized, and it should be removed.

Google is an automated system, based on text posted on other sites. The do not normally index content based on moral principles – computers are not good at that job. The Magen David on the dog’s head, which is a give away to us, is not so clearly understood by them.

What is that paranoia about antisemitism? Why is it the only issue on the internet,or in the other communications media for that matter, that one always reads about? It seems to stem from a great sense of undue insecurity by a group of people, who are beset by an undefinable fear,or it is a world wide effort to make one single group of people untouchable for whatever reason it may have. Can anybody show me one other group, that is as paranoid about itself? There are so many items in these media, that can easily be construed as far more anti to some other group. But one never hears, reads or sees this kind of upheaval about it.The term antisemitism has been so overused, that not only people have become immune to its meaning, but are beginning to feel numb to what it is supposed to convey.

    • Jen July 7, 2011 at 4:24 pm #

What is the paranoia about Antisemitism? Let’s not forget the events not too long ago (in my own mother’s lifetime) whereby millions of Jews were killed without a second thought. Was this a single event in history? Not by a long shot! Jews are often “villainized” or marginalized by the greater populace due to centuries (millennia) of both religious and social stigmatism. History repeats itself. If you saw the absolute senseless, unprovoked and disturbingly unchallenged persecution of Jewish people firsthand, you would never ask such a question. Antisemitism is a contagion that spreads worse than any flu. Any society seeking a scapegoat for its ills and hardships will often grasp onto easy targets. Antisemitism makes this all too easy. Attempted Jewish “extermination” has happened thousands of times in countless of cultures and times, so why NOT be paranoid? If we weren’t paranoid somewhat for sheer preservation, we wouldn’t exist.

    • Bob July 9, 2011 at 1:24 pm #

“people have become immune to its meaning, but are beginning to feel numb to what it is supposed to convey.”

Your numbness and immunity are indicative of your ignorance.
Harvard Phi Beta Kappa George Santayana:
“Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it”
Those less ignorant say, “Never Again.”

If speaking out against the genocide of the Palestinians, and the worldwide assasinations of popular leaders worldwide by the Mossad is anti-semitic, then I for one declare myself anti-semitic.

You won’t hear any lame-ass apologies from me for speaking out against the brutality and racism of the Israelis, who, by the way, are not even the real tribe of Judah at all, nor do they have ancestral roots in the land of Judeah, so they have no right to call themselves ‘Jews’ in the first place, nor do they have any legitimate claim to the land that they have stolen. The word ‘Jew’ is not found in the old testament. It was introduced in later translations of the Bible. The Israelis are terrorists, pure and simple and accusations of ‘anti-semitism’ are a pure and simple propaganda technique to shut up the truth-speakers.

  11. Ayman July 7, 2011 at 7:27 am #

    Hi Richard,
I am against the claims that this cartoon is anti-semitic. Having David star on the head of the dog doesn’t mean “Jews”, it can also refer to the symbol of the state of Israel. Why it is accepted the this cartoon is not degrading American people despite having the American symbol of justice and freedom, the statue, and a sign on the dog which reads “USA”?? the viewers will know that this cartoon is against the American gov and not American people and so does the hat, it is against the brutal killing machine of Israel, but not the Jews. I don’t think that anyone needs to apologise to anybody.

I totally refuse this framework which is dubbed as “anti-semitic” the zionist or the Jewish lobby in the west trying to impose on freedom of speech when it comes to criticising Israel. This scarecrow, taboo, or whatever it is called must be destroyed and freedom of speech must be restored.

    • Bob July 7, 2011 at 11:20 am #

You surely must realize that freedom of speech is protected for all thereby affording those of us not of like mind to condemn such hate speech.

      • Ayman July 8, 2011 at 3:38 am #

Yeah, when it comes to israel it is all classified as “hate speech”. Richard Falk as a Jew himself has been intimidated because of such cartoon, and you fool yourself with saying there is freedom of speech!

    • Steven Burton July 15, 2011 at 10:07 am #

Way to deny the obvious Ayman. Don’t ever let facts cloud your judgement. It is beautiful thing to keep your mind remain totally empty, even in the face of mountains of actual information.

  12. Brad Brzezinski July 7, 2011 at 7:45 am #

Just to change the subject for a moment: the UN has now found Israel’s blockade of Gaza to be legal. Professor Falk himself said it was illegal in his previous arguments on the general subject and was wrong.

How does this affect the issue of the morality of the flotillas and indeed the criticisms (now villifications) of Israel that have abounded with such alacrity here and elsewhere?

    • Thomas July 8, 2011 at 5:17 am #

Just two points of clarification: Your statement “the UN has now found Israel’s blockade of Gaza to be legal” is mistaken.

The Secretary-General’s panel, which is comprised of independent former politicians who serve in their personal capacities, has stated its view that the naval blockade is legal.

It is not “the UN.” And there are different bodies of law pertaining to a “blockade” and a “naval blockade.”

      • Ray Joseph Cormier July 8, 2011 at 9:30 pm #

Statement by Abba Eban, Israeli Foreign Minister, June 14, 1967.

“Wars are not always begun by shots. They are often begun by action and the action which really created the state of war in an acute sense was the imposition of the blockade. To try to murder somebody by strangulation is just as much attempted murder as if you tried to murder him by a shot, and therefore the act of strangulation was the first violent, physical act which had its part in the sequence.”

What was True when a blockade was imposed on Israel is not True when a blockade is imposed on others?

      • Brad Brzezinski July 9, 2011 at 7:45 am #

Thank you for the clarification. The same reasoning applies I suppose to other panels; the Goldstone Report comes to mind.

      • Bob July 9, 2011 at 11:52 am #

        @ Ray Joseph Cormier

In answer to your question: What was True when a blockade was imposed on Israel is not True when a blockade is imposed on others?

You reference this quote failing to acknowledge that the first act in said case was an agressive blockade in direct contradiction to the present condition where the blockade is defensive in response to continued, repeated first acts of aggressive nature by palestinians.
        apples and oranges.
        highly recommend chronology/fact checking

  13. TMR July 7, 2011 at 8:48 am #

It seems the professor needs to take a closer look at international law, just as he needed to take a closer look at the cartoon.

To all those defending the cartoon, the kippah with the Star of David is clearly a reference to Jews. If they wanted to refer to just Israel, perhaps the dog would have held or been wrapped in an Israeli flag. That’s not the case. Notice how the dog is chewing on the bloody corpse of a child? That goes along with traditional antisemitic views of Jews, that we dine on the blood and flesh of children.

None of that takes into account the overarching antisemitism of exceptionalism that pervades criticism of Israel.

    • Ray Joseph Cormier July 8, 2011 at 9:35 pm #

The early Christians were portrayed by the Roman Nobles, rich land and slave owners regime as being cannibals for eating the body and drinking the blood of Christ. There is nothing new under the sun.

    • Ray Joseph Cormier July 8, 2011 at 9:41 pm #

The Pope wears a kippa. Maybe it was his the dog was wearing. We are living in the Common Era of Christ where Jews no longer have exclusivity or preferential rights to God and the Promises made to Abraham.

      • Bob July 9, 2011 at 1:04 pm #

Jews never claimed “exclusivity” or “preferential rights” to God. The jealousy and envy you exhibit due to your lack of comprehension is sadly apalling though unfortunately not uncommon. Enlighten yourself to facts and you will find that through Christ all those who bless Abraham’s seed shall be thus blessed. This has no root in any imagined “common era of Christ” of which you speak but is rooted firmly in an individual’s choice to come unto Christ.

  14. Paul Wapner July 7, 2011 at 9:13 am #

There is nothing wrong with your vision. You see much clearer than the rest of us. Sadly, too many of us Jews refuse to acknowledge Israel’s immoral actions out of ideological blindness. Over the years, you have courageously chosen to see events through the lens of a world citizen with a concern for justice for ALL peoples. The risks of doing so are that you occasionally anger those of us too tied to a circumscribed identity. The pay offs, however, include helping us to embrace and act from our largest humanity.

I agree with John. You have apologized from the heart. It is time to let the incident go and not worry about your predictable critics. We need you to continue to shed fresh insight into the human predicament and to prod us with your consistently perceptive criticisms.

  15. JA July 7, 2011 at 9:44 am #

Thank you for your “final” attempt and sincerely appreciate your explanation of the error in using the not so obvious cartoon. I hope future comments will as objective as possible without the use of cartoons that often add non intented verbage to an editorial. Again thanks.

  16. norm depalma July 7, 2011 at 11:13 am #

Unfortunately, I think we are witnessing what I had foretold yesterday. This cartoonish controversy added to the controversies over previous comments the Professor has made has served to ‘chill’ his speech to the point where he has ceased to defend himself beyond a sad mea culpa.
Is this what all the commentators on this site want: to silence the voice of a leading scholar and humanitarian?
Professor, can you please stand up and not be cowed by this attempt to trample on your rights to free speech?!

    • Bob July 7, 2011 at 11:36 am #

As a “commentator on this site” I have no desire to “silence the voice of a leading scholar and humanitarian.”
Unfortunately you however exhibit a “cartoonish” perception of “rights to free speech” and obviously would deny them to any not of like mind.
I actually agree with you in finding it cowardly that the professor has made a “sad mea culpa” and refuses to defend his views.
Without dialogue amidst our differing opinions we may never be truly educated.

    • Richard Falk July 7, 2011 at 11:51 am #

I agree that the more hostile comments are designed to intimidate and invalidate, but I did want to express my sincere assessment of my own responsibility, which was a matter of negligence and carelessness. I had never intended to associate myself with anti-semitic content, and would never have posted it had I been aware.

      • Rol July 7, 2011 at 1:48 pm #

Re: the “hostile comments … designed to intimidate and invalidate…” After having gone to such great lengths to clarify and nuance your own intentions, you profess to understand and expound upon, in no uncertain terms, the intentions of a whole group of commenters.

My question for you is: Aren’t the hostile commenters entitled to their anger? Whether you intended it or not (I hope not), your posting of that cartoon had the effect of propagating a hateful and mindless slur.

Part of taking responsibility for your mistakes is taking your lumps meekly and with a contrite heart—even if you suspect that some off those dishing out the lumps aren’t doing so with the purest of intentions. Take some advice: If you want to at least appear truly contrite, ditch the defensiveness and admit without qualifications or explanations that even the most hostile and intransigent of your critics have a right to be angry and upset by your actions.

      • Jen July 7, 2011 at 4:29 pm #

Thank you for your apology instead of trying to defend its content. That shows a strength of character. I hadn’t previously realized that it was a matter of mistaken detail. These blasted cartoons are a tricky thing.

      • mike July 8, 2011 at 11:24 am #

Unfortunately your track record is much longer than this incident.
I have never understood why universities and governments find outright hate mongers so attractive but they do. People tell me you are a Jew, I have to say I don’t think so by the definitions I grew up with. One can only hope that one day you reap what you sow. If that happens and your Arab friends come to get you they will be glad to call you a Jew as they kill you.
I’m a Jew , you are simply a hateful individual.

      • Ray Joseph Cormier July 8, 2011 at 9:57 pm #

This cartoon has caused an extreme backlash and controversy as much as the Muhammad cartoon published in a Danish Newspaper years ago.

Let the one who is without sin cast the 1st stone.

  17. Chiara Brown July 7, 2011 at 11:14 am #

You will never be able to “clarify” this to people who aren’t interested in the truth and simply want to “get” you on something. You’ve said your piece, they will continue to scream and rant no matter what you say.

        Richard,

Those who harbor hatred against others cannot appreciate kindness in those they disagree with. They cannot accept sincere apologies. They target individuals, not desastrous, illegal, brutal policies. They exaggerate to vilify the other and will not acknowledge that a sorry should be the end of the matter in any civilized society.

You have apologised. That is the end of the matter. I look forward to reading your next enlightening article.

If you can’t understand the meaning of a blatantly anti-semitic cartoon, you are unable to fulfill the duties of your post. If you can’t understand that a blatant lie makes it impossible for you to ever be believed, you should stop trying. Either way, you have shown yourself to be unfit. It’s long past time to retire and relieve the rest of the world from putting up with your inability to understand simple, basic values and facts.

    • Ray Joseph Cormier July 8, 2011 at 4:54 pm #

The only time Israel appreciated the UN was in 1948 when the International Community assigned it defined boundaries within Palestine.

Since then Israel has expanded way beyond those assigned boundries and when the UN reminds Israel of it’s obligations under International Law, the only refrain is the UN is anti-Semitic and good for nothing..

  20. Aaron July 7, 2011 at 1:01 pm #

  21. dave July 7, 2011 at 1:20 pm #

If you really didn’t realize it was an antisemitic cartoon Why did you deny you posted it in the first place?

  22. kentman July 7, 2011 at 3:28 pm #

I believe you Mr Falk, and no need to drag this any further. I do think however that your comments and approach over the years, have somewhat contributed to the escalation of the dispute. Language creates reality, and your own powerful language (the Nazi regime, apartheid, again and again…) created a merciless reality, so full of hate. It doesn’t help, it only makes Israelis close their ears and hearts even harder. Despite years of wars, things have never been so tense between Jews and Muslims. There is a general lack of compassion in the air. It is stronger than ever before and it was fueled by people such as yourself. Please Mr Falk, retire. Go home.

You are not disillusioned by Israel but by the real world. Apart from a tiny far-Lefist minority, Israelis are living in the real world. They are surrounded by violent neighbors seeking their destruction for various reason: anti-Semitism, desire of predation, religious hatred, …

Like most far-Leftists, you are rejecting the real world. Pretty childish.

      • Ben David July 13, 2011 at 9:32 pm #

And in your list “anti-semitism, desire of predation, religious hatred” you fail to mention a single “real world” cause for differences: settlement, occupation, assassinations, massacres, etc.

Richard Falk’s apology/explanation for posting anti-semitic cartoon on his blogsite here.

  26. Peter Falk's evil twin July 8, 2011 at 12:07 am #

Nobody posts a cartoon they don’t understand or agree with. You knew full well what the cartoon meant. Why would you lie about it otherwise? They only surprise here as that you are not only an evil anti-semite, but manifestly stupid as well.

  27. Ayman July 8, 2011 at 3:48 am #

Hundreds of movies have been produced depicting priests and nuns, and even Jesus and Mary in a heinous way – It is called freedom of speech.

Hundreds of cartoons attacked muslims and their prophet – it is freedom of speech.

But when it comes to Jews and Israel – it is anti-semitic.

This needs to end and we want to criticise the Jews and expose their bad deeds as christians, muslims, hindus, etc are exposed and their bad deeds are magnified.

Richard, you are a Jew yourself and you honestly and bravely criticise Israel. But I feel sorry for you when I read your lines which contain your apology. You have swallowed the bait mate! I think you want you to look over your shoulder evertime you write about israel or the Jewish lobby. Alas!

    • deepaktripathi July 8, 2011 at 4:18 am #

      Dear Richard,

Here is the crux of the argument. I am a Hindu born into a family of priests-politicians. When I want to criticize certain aspects of my religion as it is used by some, I will not hesitate. The notion that we can be a Hindu or Muslim or Jew hater even though we belong to the same faith is absurd. Such campaigns of vilification always have quite separate motives. It is important that we do not surrender to such campaings.

Richard, you are an honorable, courageous, wise person of enormous integrity that are very widely acknoledged and respected. Above all, you have humility – something that cannot be associated with some of the posters here. Truth, honesty, justice are far better human shields in the end than money, hatred, weapons. Support for you crosses all boundaries.

I hope this entirely expected episode is over as far as you are concerned and I will read your next piece of writing in the coming days.

      Ayman:

You do not understand how egregious this is. Richard Falk is a representative of the United Nations, which receives public funding, not a privately owned, independent newspaper. Public officials represent everyone because we, the taxpayers, pay their salaries. Governments collect taxes from us, the people, and give it to the United Nations (amongst a lot of things). If a privately owned newspaper or magazine publishes something you don’t like, don’t buy it or write a letter to the editor, or even boycott it. If enough people don’t like it, it will go out of business or change it’s tune. In the case of a politician who is also supported by taxes from the people, vote him out in a democratic election, or demand his immediate resignation. As a public official, Mr. Falk can not do or say anything he wants if, that is, he wants to keep his job. And I don’t think he’ll have it much longer.

    • Ayman July 8, 2011 at 4:28 pm #

Just to correct my last line : “They” want you to look over your shoulder every time you write about israel or the Jewish lobby.

Hatrous propaganda was published in Muslim countries long before the Muhamad cartoons affairs and you know it. This is typical Arab bad faith.

  28. Ray Joseph Cormier July 8, 2011 at 4:01 am #

Professor, Do not cave into the pressure being applied to you. The cartoon is not anti-Semitic at all and is almost generic in describing the perception many have of the US toward fundamental principles of Justice not only in Libya but the world.

The Jerusalem Post has an article on the cartoon today and I just submitted this comment with the header ‘anti-Semitic.’ While the JP has published most of my comments submitted, they may not publish this.

If Isaiah, Jeremiah and Ezekiel were alive Today, based on some of what they wrote concerning Israel, they would be branded anti-Semitic as well.

One more step on the Road to Armageddon.

Israel expropriates Palestinian land in order to legalize West Bank settlement
Move is Netanyahu government’s first confiscation of land in the territories.
      By Chaim Levinson

For the first time in three years, the state has confiscated uncultivated land in the West Bank. The land will be used to legalize a nearby settlement outpost.

Last week, acting on orders from the government, the Civil Administration declared 189 dunams of land belonging to the Palestinian village of Karyut to be state land, so as to retroactively legalize houses and a road in the Hayovel neighborhood of the settlement of Eli. This would seem to violate Israel’s long-standing commitment to the United States not to expropriate Palestinian lands for settlement expansion.

An Ottoman land law dating from 1858 allows uncultivated land to be declared state land. This law, which is still in force in the West Bank, is what was used to carry out the expropriation…………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

      Professor,

Courage my friend! ‘Tis not too late to make a better world.

Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness’ sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are you, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.
Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.
You are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.
You are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.
Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it gives light to all that are in the house.

You should be ashamed of yourself, supporting the likes of Hamas. Can’t you see what they’ve done to Gaza? Do you think women or Christians there have a snowball’s chance in hell? You are just the sort of contrarian lefty lib professor I hated when I was in college. If you have Jewish ancestors, I’m sure they would disown you. I can’t wait until the CA university system shuts down. You deserve to be out on your ass. Most Americans support Israel and its ancient right to Judea and Samaria. Better the brilliant chosen people than misogynist filistini kelb.

You should have payed more attention in college. Americans are not traditionally fundamentalists who believe in implementing strict readings of scripture (which don’t even support zionist claims anyway). Hence, they do not support any so-called “ancient rights.”

Your “sympathy” for women and Christians in Gaza is insincere. Likely you support besieging them, bombing them in the Gaza war, and ghettoizing Bethlehem.

  33. Reuben from NYC July 8, 2011 at 8:31 am #

Mr. Falk even if you did make a mistake it still would have been a fair representation. Just look at todays news article in Haaretz news paper in regards to The Israeli government using an Ottoman law (Of all things!) as a pretext for taking land away from the Palestinians. I dont see Jews like Mr. Cantor who brought the recent house bill to end aid to Palestine if they go to the UN or any of the others such as Senator Schumer or Dov Hikind calling for an end to aid for Israel if they dont cease their constant schemes, so yes it does encompass the Jews pissing on our system of Justice while chewing on broken and bloody bones. Its not antisemetic its fact.

The USA should not be giving aid to a country that has racist rabbis on its payroll or a country that uses old archaic laws as a reason for confiscating lands while totally ignoring modern day International laws that it agreed to with statehood such as the Geneva Conventions, the International Declaration of Human rights laws regarding the right of return as well as the many UN laws it agreed to. When I see people like Cantor who seemingly works more for Israel then he does the USA begin to call on Israel to follow International laws thats when you can even begin to say that cartoon is antisemetic.
When we veto in the UN against our own policy in favor of the Jewish nation and not one word comes out of Abe Foxmans mouth about it thats when that cartoon will and should be considered antisemetic

  34. Ivan Codina July 8, 2011 at 9:13 am #

The cartoon isn’t anti-semitic at all. If it wasn’t Israel, take a muslim county, do they say that you are islamophobic? I don’t think that. Mister Falk, you are a great man and the world and the UN need you. You have all my support.

  35. WS July 8, 2011 at 12:37 pm #

Mr Falk has to learn to stay away from the third rail. In America you do not even accidentally criticize the state of Israel.

He has a habit of defending oppressed groups and sticking up for the human rights of anyone, friend or foe. The kind of person that needs to be sent to a re education camp. Do we have those yet?

    • John from Toronto July 8, 2011 at 9:33 pm #

It’s not in the US that they have reeducation camps. If was in the prison countries of the Soviet Union, Communist China, Pol Pot’s Cambodia, Vietnam and on and on and on. The friends of the left were big into that.

      • Ben David July 13, 2011 at 9:41 pm #

I saw you speak at a law school symposium this past year where you described Israel as dragging American by a leash like a poodle. Clearly you found a cartoon that [almost] encompassed your deepest sentiments. Your recklessness is frightening and dangerous. You claim to be a champion for all of humanity, and yet in your pursuit of so-called “justice” for one people, you effectively condemn another. I do not need your apologies Professor Falk, because I do not think that they are genuine.

  37. Sherri Munnerlyn July 8, 2011 at 4:11 pm #

I just want to say I so admire all you have done to speak up for human rights and take unpopular stands regarding Palestine, that support liberty and justice for all in the land of Palestine. You walk in the footsteps of such great leaders, like Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr. Recently, I found a book you wrote with others about Vienam and human rights abuses carried out there, like entering villages and attacking fleeing civilians. And I watched Cast Lead begin, and heard the news reports, and I saw the same thing you saw happen in Vietnam, soldiers entering villages, shooting at fleeing civilans. These human rights abuses we carry out in our wars that violate international law are immoral and wrong, and we so need people like you staying and pointing them out to our world. Thank you for all you have done to seek an end to the injustices and violations of international law in Palestine. Sincerely, Sherri Munnerlyn

  38. Ben July 8, 2011 at 4:45 pm #

OK. First you denied posting the cartoon saying you would never post anything like it. Then you admitted posting it but insisted you didn’t know that it was offensive. Then you removed it acknowledging that some were offended, but you did not know why. Then you explained that your eyesight wasn’t so good and that’s how the details which make the cartoon anti-Semitic escaped your gaze.
And you have apologized, acknowledging that the cartoon was indeed anti-Semitic.
So why post all the bullshit from your idiot supporters who praise you for speaking truth to (supposed Jewish) power by posting the cartoon which they insist is not anti-Semitic but which you have already agreed is???? If you regard anti-Semitism as repugnant, why give it a home on your website? How come you challenge none of your anti-Semitic posters and none of their rants – not a one?
Let’s keep those apologies and explanations rolling shall we?

  39. John from Toronto July 8, 2011 at 8:29 pm #

In the old days Jews who wanted to get along would convert to the dominant religion where they lived. Falk is no different. It’s just that the dominant religion for him is an insane and unthinking leftism. To get along he has to prove that he can outdo his colleagues in his hatred for Israel. A slimy little man.

  40. William July 8, 2011 at 10:18 pm #

Mr. Faulk. I urge you not to appologize in this way. But how can I do that as you wrote in your own words a clarification. I say Israel , Zionists ,and men like Henrey Kissinger are perfect examples of the need for artists to make pictures like the one you posted. Perhaps we are all wasting anytime here and we should seek the artist , not for persecution mind you , rather to make sure he feels like a smart outstanding person with friendly followers and leaders.

  42. talknic July 9, 2011 at 12:09 am #

The cartoon depicts Israel & America (thru AIPAC lobbying) dissing justice, aka Customary International Law and the UN Charter, all of which can be shown to be true by the numerous UNSC resolutions against Israel.

Israel demands to be recognized as the Jewish State. It’s Declaration of statehood says “THE STATE OF ISRAEL … will be based on freedom, justice and peace as envisaged by the prophets of Israel”, yet when it is depicted as the Jewish state, it cries foul?.

Antisemitism is the hatred of Jewish folk. The distaste one has for Israeli Government policies that have deservedly attracted condemnation of numerous UNSC Resolutions for some 62 years, is not Antisemitism.

  43. talknic July 9, 2011 at 12:47 am #

Israel purposefully ignores Customary International Law and the UN Charter (esp Chapt XI), continues to Illegally acquire territory by war, illegally annexes, illegally settles, displaces and dispossesses hundreds of thousands of Palestinian CIVILIANS.

Razes villages, farms, homes. Illegally institutes Israeli Civil Law in “territories occupied” and in territories it ha illegally annexed and in territories it has never even attempted to annex. http://wp.me/pDB7k-jA#nthsthnonannexed

Has launched preemptive wars under which it has illegally claimed more than 50 % of what remained of the Provisional State of Palestine after Israel was declared independent of Palestine. There are no UNSC resolutions condemning any Arab State for attacking Israel. http://www.un.org/documents/scres.htm

Refuses to adhere to the GCs, yet according to all the Ceasefire, Armistice and Peace agreements, Israel’s wars have been between High Contracting Powers, under which civilians are protected.

Refuses RoR to genuine Palestine refugees, yet demands refugee status for Jewish folk who’re no longer refugees from Arab States ( the Palestinians BTW didn’t vote for the Arab states leadership). Yet basic maths and simple logic tell us there was never a demographic threat to Israel. http://wp.me/pDB7k-jS

Continually lies about not having defined borders.. http://wp.me/pDB7k-KL

Spreads fallacy after fallacy about the Palestinians http://wp.me/PDB7k-Y#ignorance

Then bitches when it’s depicted for what it is, a rogue state, which happens to be Jewish (by it’s own demand)

  44. Sid Bacharach July 9, 2011 at 5:48 am #

Professor Falk: You ask your readers to give you the benefit of the doubt and accept your explanation, regardless of its implausibility. In fact, you have had three entirely different explanations. We are not talking about nuances. First you said you never posted the cartoon. Then you said there was nothing antiSemitic about the cartoon. Finally, you said that the cartoon was indeed antiSemitic but you did not have your eyeglasses on when you saw the cartoon or when you posted it. I find it unlikely that somehow, you took off your eyeglasses only when you were viewing and posting the cartoon. The bigger point Professor Falk, is that you give no quarter to people you do not like or to nations you don’t like. You are never willing to give any Israeli, any supporter of Israel, or the State of Israel the benefit of any doubt. When you see an action by any Israeli or supporter of Israel that you don’t like, you pounce on them. You never ask for an explanation, and you never ask your readers to give an Israeli the benefit of any doubt. But when Richard Falk gets himself enmeshed in a disastrous public relations problem, you ask to be given the benefit of every doubt. Professor Falk, had you been kinder to others, you might be entitled to such a response.. But, Professor Falk, you have spent a lifetime questioning the good faith of anyone who disagrees with you. How profoundly sad.

    • Richard Falk July 9, 2011 at 12:05 pm #

Mr. Bacharach: I had decided not to respond further to the many comments I have been receiving, but I felt that yours
was well-intentioned, and I make an exception. First of all, I think you would find from those who know me well,
including those who disagree with my opinions, that I am very respectful of diverse viewpoints, and do not question
the good faith of those who disagree with me if they do so in a civil fashion. Further, the sequence you describe with
respect to the cartoon may seem strange to you, but it happens to be completely true. At first, I thought the reference was
to my latest blog, which had no such cartoon. Later when I realized it was the Qaddafi blog, I didn’t pick up the anti-semitic
connotations, and later still, I became aware of its nature, and regretted my ever posting it in the first place. It was careless
but innocent on my part. The anti-semitic message of the cartoon had nothing at all to do with my blog that was devoted to
double standards in relation to international criminal accountability. If I had intended to post such a cartoon, why would I
remove it the instant I became aware of it? and why would I want to discredit myself with a message that contradicts my
entire life experience? I am not trying so much to convince you as to explain the incident as best I can.

  45. Ken Smith July 9, 2011 at 10:12 am #

    This man is dangerous!

  46. Bandolero July 9, 2011 at 1:40 pm #

That cartoon is not anti-semitic. View the date when it was published at http://www.mahjoob.com: 2009-03-06. So remember the circumstances: it was only a few weeks after the Israeli assault on Gaza dubbed “Operation Cast Lead”. More than 1000 people died due to Operation Cast Lead, which was executed to a large part with US-American weapons, provided by the U.S. as aid to Israel. And while respected courts in Britain and other countries find it worthy to issue arrest warrants against Israeli politicians responsible for Operation Cast Lead, the ICC has done nothing.

It can’t because to get active it needs a UNSC mandate. So who is protecting Israeli politicians in the UN SC from being prosecuted by the ICC for Operation Cast Lead? You may find it in the dog. And why is the U.S. doing the service of protecting Israeli politicians from criminal investigations of the ICC? I think it’s not unfair to say, it’s last not least because of the power of the – mainly jewish – Israel lobby in the U.S., which has a big saying in U.S. foreign policy regarding the midle east. Find it in the cartoon.

Libya has no lobby in the U.S. as powerful as Israel has. So Libyan leaders are prosecuted by the ICC while Israeli are not. That’s a perfect example of the double standards of international justice.

That cartoon is hard hitting, but it’s accurate. Being accurate is in no way anti-semitic.

    • Bob July 9, 2011 at 2:21 pm #

ahhh Bandelero, such an appropriate moniker as you make fast and loose with the facts.
In truth the action you refer to known as “Operation Cast lead” was employed only after “enduring an 8-year-long barrage of 12,000 rockets and having exhausted all other options. Israel launched a military operation against Hamas in Gaza.”
It is interesting how you and those of your mindset habitually present one side of the story. You pretend the end is the beginning of the actual story. You display the absolute inability to be truthful while exhibiting a blatant disregard for facts.

      • Bandolero July 10, 2011 at 2:50 am #

        Bob,

it’s fine to see that you are able to cite the Israeli MFA, whose minister Tsipi Livni would be one of the Israeli candidates to be prosecuted by the ICC. It was Tsipi Livni against whom a British court issued an arrest warrant related to war crimes, which, though later successfully appealed, caused political action in Britain to protect Israeli officials from such charges using universal jurisdiction.

The points of the MFA would be arguments to be brought up in defense after an indictment by the ICC would bring up the Nuremberg charge of war of aggression. Given the fact that Isael killed several thousand Palestinians – about six times more Palestinians than Palestianians killed Israelis – in the recent ten years of conflict and the observation that before the Operation Cast Lead Israel deliberately violated a truce with Gaza by killing Pallestinians, I don’t find the argument convincing, but of course it could be brought up.

But the remaining point of truth in the blind justice cartoon is, that the ICC cannot prosecute this crime, because political powers like the USA block the ICC giving the authority to prosecute the supreme crime of waging a war of aggression.

So charges brought against Israeli officials would more likely bring up charges of war crimes like using disproportionate force and ordering wilfull killlings of civilians and the deliberate destruction of civilian infrastructure.

It’s a legitimate opnion that Israeli officials even when the number of killed people by Israel is very large as it was in Operation Cast Lead don’t face international prosecution largely due to the political power situation. As you said, the cartoon tells one side of the story: that of a possible prosecution which doesn’t happen because of the situation of political power. You may argue that successfully appealed decisions of British courts and the allegations of the Goldstone report are not final, but having – in your words – “one side of the story”, in an early cartoon criticizing double standards is definitely not anti-semitic.

ahh Bob as in “bob and weave” you poor poor victim. I always find it amazing that Pro-Israeli, Pro-zionist and Pro-occupation people always remark in various numbers of course those “rockets”. People like you always fail to mention the checkpoints, the years long curfews, the house razings, the wall, the settlers, the water cannon attacks on Palestinian fishing boats, the olive tree thefts, the olive grove burnings, the mosque burnings, the price tag attacks, home invasions by IDF, IDF sexual abuse towards Palestinian children , the settlers stoning Palestinian school kids. settlers draining their sewage onto Palestinian farmland, burying diseased culled chickens onto Palestinian play areas, dismantling Palestinian playgrounds and the list goes on. I guess you think that because Jews are doing all these things to Christian and Muslim Palestinains that you think that its all mana from heaven ayy? Compared to the damage the Qassams have caused I would say you drop about 18000 rockets a day on those people…but poor poor Bob. Here bob have a tissue.

I am not the one whining about checkpoints, curfews, olive trees and chickens.
You offer me a tissue for what again? Pointing out the facts?
The facts are that you begin each argument in the middle.
        Definitely a childish, leftist tactic.
“Mom! He’s touching me!” with the blatant disregard for the facts that you have poked, prodded, hit, bit, punched, and slapped your sibling all day and finally in a tired, defensive posture the sibling restrains you against another assault. This is always your beginning!
Open your eyes to the wide world around you Reuben. Shake off that skewed perception and tunnel vision that brings such misery to those of your mindset that have never grasped the concept of cause and effect.

You Reuben have chosen to stand on the side of evil.
You stand in defense of hate speech.
Portraying a people as consuming the bloody corpse of children while standing with those who desire and loudly promise the extinction of said people is your wrong headed choice.

  49. Frank July 9, 2011 at 8:20 pm #

Falk is an hypocrite. According to him, Arabs are peace loving people willing to live at peace with Israel. How can they publish such an hatrous propaganda?

    Am I missing something here.

      Professor:
Now is the time to confront your accusers. While I appreciate your efforts at staying silent, ‘laying low’ and weathering what you may think is but a passing storm, I think this is a great opportunity and a necessity for fighting back.
I think you and the cause will be best served by straight forward talk–the kind of talk the elites have been trying to suppress. Please note that you have millions of backers hoping, praying that you use this opportunity to speak the truth to power!

Yes dear, you’re missing the whole world here.

      Israelis: People raised on hatred

  50. Israeli Citizen July 9, 2011 at 9:39 pm #

Your extreme views on the middle east conflict only make it harder to solve and make Israelis more distrustful of the UN and other international bodies.

Also you’re 80 years old and live in California, maybe its time to retire from your UN post and enjoy the sun and a relaxing life.

  51. edwin July 10, 2011 at 8:19 am #

I would have thought that it was anti-Semitic to place the Star of David as the flag of a country.

Is there any surprise over ambiguity between being anti-Israel and anti-Jewish? It is deliberate and carefully nurtured as is shown by many of the comments here. I’m not sure where we get the idea that the cartoon is clearly anti-Semitic – unless one believes that Israel is the embodiment of what it means to be Jewish.

How do you know that the cartoonist means “Jews” as opposed to “Israel”? What the cartoonist meant was not obvious to me.

That you would choose to remove something that was ambiguous makes some sense. That you would engage in grovelling seems rather over the top for something ambiguous.

    • edwin July 10, 2011 at 8:29 am #

Hmmm. The cartoon is anti-Semitic. It does equate Jews with Israel. Well the cartoonist has lots of company as shown in the comments here. Lots of people who are outraged over the cartoon seem to share the view that Israel and Jews are synonymous.

Quit grovelling and go back to posting.

  52. pamela July 12, 2011 at 5:43 am #

Daily, at the U.N. we can all watch the bi-polarism of the world expressed: Identity politics and geographic economics, both, being promoted in a ‘salad dressing of delusion’, bottled, labelled, and “sold” as ‘Human Rights’.

It’s like trying to mix oil with vinegar, the delusion must be constantly shook or the ingredients will separate.

  53. rehmat1 July 12, 2011 at 7:04 pm #

Richard I assured you there is nothing wrong with the cartoon. You should not have removed it nor you should apologize for posting it – because the people who are attacking you, have not a single drop of Semitic blood. They’re 101% Khazarian Turks.

It need a great courage to stand up to the Ziocons Lobby these day. Helen Thomas was crucified last year for telling the truth. Cheer up and don’t feel sorry for yourself.

I have honored you on my blog below:

    INTERVIEW INVITATION

    Dear Sir,

The Bulgarian National Radio, being the most influential public-service media in this country, has a specialized weekly analytical program on international politics called “Saturday 150” with average weekly audience of two million people.
We have special interest in the security situation in Africa, especially in Libya. Therefore we address you with the request for short prerecorded telephone interview . We believe your expert opinion on international law and his strong view over the intervention in Libya will be very interesting and important for our Bulgarian listeners. We would like to ask the following questions:
What do you think about the reasons and the motivation behind the NATO-led military intervention in Libya?
Do you see a way out of this situation any sooner or we shall expect even deeper engagement with ground forces?
Are France and the UK capable to negotiate with Col. Qaddafi for settling some kind of a peace agreement or eventual fragmentation of the country?
The International Criminal Court has issued warrants for the arrest of Col. Muammar Qaddafi, his son, Seif al-Islam and Libya’s intelligence chief Abdullah Senussi. They are accused of crimes against humanity. Do you find some double standard comparing with other regimes?
Can NATO provide arms to the Libyan rebellion without violating the international law?

Technically it would take no more than 10 minutes telephone conversation. Our deadline to tape the phone conversation is Friday, July 15.
I didn’t found your contacts anywhere so I’m trying to reach you through your blog.

We would appreciate if could assist us in scheduling this interview, according to your agenda and to the hour difference between Bulgaria and the US. If you do need further details about this invitation, please do not hesitate to contact me anytime.

    Sincerely yours,

    Nikola MILADINOV

I took the liberty of passing this number on to Michael Harris, host of Ottawa’s daily CFRA open line talk show. He acknowledged my email saying he will call you himself.

      • Richard Falk July 17, 2011 at 10:34 am #

Thanks, Ray, for your consistent encouragement, which is greatly appreciated. Richard

      • Ray Joseph Cormier July 22, 2011 at 4:52 am #

Professor, if you haven’t seen it already, Haaretz has an item on you Today leading to your interview with The Jewish Daily Forward.

If I’m relieved to see some positive press on you by two Jewish Publications, I hope you feel even better! In my estimation, it is a very good snapshot into your being. Of course I’m biased. I already think you’re one of the Good People on this earth.

While I think the particle is good, the majority of comments are from the same old school of character assassins.

btw, did Michael Harris ever reach you for his Middle East ‘Peace Project?’ I have not heard anything mentioned about it on his Radio Talk Show or from him.

      • Richard Falk July 22, 2011 at 10:26 am #

Ray: Thanks for your message and continuing support. I have not heard from Michael Harris, but don’t worry about it. I have had too much contact with media people in recent weeks.

      • Ray Joseph Cormier July 22, 2011 at 7:23 pm #

Unfortunately for them, the overwhelming majority of commentators in the Jewish Daily Forward are against you Professor Falk. Other Jews really hate and despise you and don’t mince their word about it.

My two comments in the discussion are the only ones to have a -1p rating. No other comment has a rating at all. A rating of 16p is average. I just made the 2nd comment and the negative rating appeared instantly with the posting of it. Obviously I am as low in their esteem as you are, Professor Falk. We may be yoked together.

        IntenseDebate Reputation Meter

The reputation meter is a measure of strength of all previous comments made on our system by a certain commenter as judged by his or her peers. It is one way to tell whether the comment you are reading is written by someone well-regarded.

No one has answered my comments so it is meaningless and a joke to me. It appears someone by the name of Simple Raven made a comment.

In an allegorical sense, my comment was like being Daniel in the Lion’s Den.

And he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying,
Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.
Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.
Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.
Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.
Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.
Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it gives light unto all that are in the house.
Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

Just a reminder! Be Strong! You have more support than you know.

Although I do believe you could/should of proofed your cartoon more carefully Mr. Falk, I do see how you could have overlooked the antisemitic nature of the illustration since the Star of David is small and difficult to see. However, I find your intentions somewhat suspect since the overall feel of the cartoon clearly hearkens back to the antisemitic illustrations common in the 18th and 19th centuries, though to the end of the Nazi era. Still, it may be possible that you have managed to live your life without ever seeing a Nazi cartoon, in which case you should be forgiven.

What truly troubles me though is that you seem to think that it is fair game to vilify the American people. You admit that you do this intentionally and one can only assume with malice. Why do you think that it is acceptable to portray the American people as cannibalistic dogs urinating on justice? Don’t you believe that inciting hatred against a people, any people, is immoral? And when the hatred that you intentionally ferment by hateful disseminating such images boils over into terror attacks against innocent Americans, don’t you believe you should be held partially accountable? Isn’t the promotion of hatred against an identifiable group actually considered a crime against humanity by the UN?

    • Richard Falk July 15, 2011 at 11:45 am #

I understand your concerns, and appreciate the civility with you have expressed them.

I have admitted that it was my carelessness with respect to the cartoon that led me to post it in the first place. I truly had never seen earlier anti-semitic cartoons that apparently resemble this one, and regret the incident.

My intention was never to belittle the American people, but to challenge the double standards employed by the U.S. Government in calling for the criminal indictment of foreign leaders while securing their own impunity. My original understanding of the cartoon was along these lines, namely, that the blindfolded goddess of justice was being manipulated by the powerful USA.

What gives with all these people here, who keep on sending in their diatribe against Dr.Falk?OK,call me anti Semitic if you want, but I honestly believe this relentless attack not just on this article, but worse against his person and character is so out of place, that I am beginning to believe, that most of it is based on a sense of an insecure feeling, because deep down they know, that there is a sound basis for what Dr.Falk originally stated. It seems that either you toe the Israeli line,or you are marked as an anti Semite and if you happen to be Jewish, you are called a self-hating Jew,regardless of credentials. That is what happens to all of them. Here for instance the names of Dr.Finkelstein,Dr.Ilan Pappé and Uri Avneri come to mind, just to name a few..They are all self-hating Jews.Could it possibly be,that they are devout Jews, atheists or maybe ant-Zionists?I am none of the above, but would like to see as much compassion directed towards the Palestinian people, who are suffering far longer under the Israeli heel, than the Jewish people did under the Nazi heel.Judge Goldstone also got the hate-treatment,when he published his findings about that cast lead crime, until somehow he was ‘persuaded’ to recant.Dr.Falk apologized, but no,that is not good enough. The vultures want blood.

You sir are a moral idiot. It’s easy to see why you revere prof falk and his ilk.

      • Ray Joseph Cormier July 24, 2011 at 11:10 am #

You sir would characterize Isaiah, Ezekiel and Jeremiah as being self-hating Jews if they were alive Today speaking their message as written in the Torah. Their prophecies are being fulfilled Today but the blind, self-righteous Jewish & Christian Zionists cannot perceive it.
