Because this unintentional posting of an anti-semitic cartoon has attracted such attention to my blog, and elicited a stream of venomous comments, I want to explain my mistake one last time. I do this without trying to excuse the carelessness involved, although I would point out that I removed the cartoon as soon as I became aware of its real content.
Even now I needed a magnifying glass to identify the anti-semitic character of the dog. My vision (at 80) is pretty good, but not good enough. It looked like a helmet to me, and the main visible symbol on the dog was the USA midriff covering. I found the cartoon through a Google image search on the page devoted to the International Criminal Court. Almost all the images there were about the Court or justice, and I assumed that this blindfolded goddess of justice was being led around by the USA. I am quite sure this cartoon would never have been allowed on the Google page if its true content had been realized, and it should be removed. Without a special effort, which admittedly I did not make, this true content is easy to overlook, and even when the initial objection to the cartoon was brought to my attention, and I looked at it, I did not appreciate the objectionable character of what was intended to be communicated.

The Cartoon is honest, and honestly depicted the involvement of both the US, and Israel in disruptive behavior across the globe. Right now Israel is again confiscating land, deporting peace activists etc., and this all with the support of the US, and AIPAC who we all know supports the US government, and is backed by greedy companies, banks etc. I live in this primitive, barbarian, violent, narcissistic country, bent on it’s own destruction, and welcome people who can speak the truth of what Israel, and the US is doing to our world, and the utter chaos, and poverty they are spreading across the globe.

I have followed Richard Falk’s comments through the years and sad to say he is a wilful bigot where Israel is concerned. An individual who takes such a Nelsonian view of Jewish history and suffering, and is incapable of reading facts fairly, does little to support the progress of peace efforts in the Middle East.
The actions of the power brokers in the Arab world are now beginning to pay the price for their corrupt and selfish leadership and the ordinary people are finally realising the consequences of their evil behaviour. It’s just a shame that the old bombast Falk doesn’t!
If you google the author of the cartoon, you will find that it is Emad Hajjaj from Mahjoob.com. Born in Ramallah, very obviously anti-Jew and anti-Israel. A site full of vile content.

Google is an automated system, based on text posted on other sites. The do not normally index content based on moral principles – computers are not good at that job. The Magen David on the dog’s head, which is a give away to us, is not so clearly understood by them.

I am against the claims that this cartoon is anti-semitic. Having David star on the head of the dog doesn’t mean “Jews”, it can also refer to the symbol of the state of Israel. Why it is accepted the this cartoon is not degrading American people despite having the American symbol of justice and freedom, the statue, and a sign on the dog which reads “USA”?? the viewers will know that this cartoon is against the American gov and not American people and so does the hat, it is against the brutal killing machine of Israel, but not the Jews. You reference this quote failing to acknowledge that the first act in said case was an agressive blockade in direct contradiction to the present condition where the blockade is defensive in response to continued, repeated first acts of aggressive nature by palestinians.

It seems the professor needs to take a closer look at international law, just as he needed to take a closer look at the cartoon.
To all those defending the cartoon, the kippah with the Star of David is clearly a reference to Jews. If they wanted to refer to just Israel, perhaps the dog would have held or been wrapped in an Israeli flag. That’s not the case. Notice how the dog is chewing on the bloody corpse of a child? That goes along with traditional antisemitic views of Jews, that we dine on the blood and flesh of children.
None of that takes into account the overarching antisemitism of exceptionalism that pervades criticism of Israel.
The early Christians were portrayed by the Roman Nobles, rich land and slave owners regime as being cannibals for eating the body and drinking the blood of Christ. There is nothing new under the sun.

Here is the crux of the argument. I am a Hindu born into a family of priests-politicians. When I want to criticize certain aspects of my religion as it is used by some, I will not hesitate. The notion that we can be a Hindu or Muslim or Jew hater even though we belong to the same faith is absurd. Such campaigns of vilification always have quite separate motives. It is important that we do not surrender to such campaings.
Richard, you are an honorable, courageous, wise person of enormous integrity that are very widely acknoledged and respected. Above all, you have humility – something that cannot be associated with some of the posters here. Truth, honesty, justice are far better human shields in the end than money, hatred, weapons. You do not understand how egregious this is. Richard Falk is a representative of the United Nations, which receives public funding, not a privately owned, independent newspaper. Public officials represent everyone because we, the taxpayers, pay their salaries. Governments collect taxes from us, the people, and give it to the United Nations (amongst a lot of things). If a privately owned newspaper or magazine publishes something you don’t like, don’t buy it or write a letter to the editor, or even boycott it. If enough people don’t like it, it will go out of business or change it’s tune. In the case of a politician who is also supported by taxes from the people, vote him out in a democratic election, or demand his immediate resignation. As a public official, Mr. Falk can not do or say anything he wants if, that is, he wants to keep his job. And I don’t think he’ll have it much longer.

In truth the action you refer to known as “Operation Cast lead” was employed only after “enduring an 8-year-long barrage of 12,000 rockets and having exhausted all other options. Israel launched a military operation against Hamas in Gaza.”
It is interesting how you and those of your mindset habitually present one side of the story. You pretend the end is the beginning of the actual story. You display the absolute inability to be truthful while exhibiting a blatant disregard for facts.

it’s fine to see that you are able to cite the Israeli MFA, whose minister Tsipi Livni would be one of the Israeli candidates to be prosecuted by the ICC. It was Tsipi Livni against whom a British court issued an arrest warrant related to war crimes, which, though later successfully appealed, caused political action in Britain to protect Israeli officials from such charges using universal jurisdiction.
The points of the MFA would be arguments to be brought up in defense after an indictment by the ICC would bring up the Nuremberg charge of war of aggression. Given the fact that Isael killed several thousand Palestinians – about six times more Palestinians than Palestianians killed Israelis – in the recent ten years of conflict and the observation that before the Operation Cast Lead Israel deliberately violated a truce with Gaza by killing Pallestinians, I don’t find the argument convincing, but of course it could be brought up.
But the remaining point of truth in the blind justice cartoon is, that the ICC cannot prosecute this crime, because political powers like the USA block the ICC giving the authority to prosecute the supreme crime of waging a war of aggression.
So charges brought against Israeli officials would more likely bring up charges of war crimes like using disproportionate force and ordering wilfull killlings of civilians and the deliberate destruction of civilian infrastructure.
It’s a legitimate opnion that Israeli officials even when the number of killed people by Israel is very large as it was in Operation Cast Lead don’t face international prosecution largely due to the political power situation. As you said, the cartoon tells one side of the story: that of a possible prosecution which doesn’t happen because of the situation of political power. You may argue that successfully appealed decisions of British courts and the allegations of the Goldstone report are not final, but having – in your words – “one side of the story”, in an early cartoon criticizing double standards is definitely not anti-semitic.

Although I do believe you could/should of proofed your cartoon more carefully Mr. Falk, I do see how you could have overlooked the antisemitic nature of the illustration since the Star of David is small and difficult to see. However, I find your intentions somewhat suspect since the overall feel of the cartoon clearly hearkens back to the antisemitic illustrations common in the 18th and 19th centuries, though to the end of the Nazi era. Still, it may be possible that you have managed to live your life without ever seeing a Nazi cartoon, in which case you should be forgiven.
What truly troubles me though is that you seem to think that it is fair game to vilify the American people. You admit that you do this intentionally and one can only assume with malice. Why do you think that it is acceptable to portray the American people as cannibalistic dogs urinating on justice? Don’t you believe that inciting hatred against a people, any people, is immoral? And when the hatred that you intentionally ferment by hateful disseminating such images boils over into terror attacks against innocent Americans, don’t you believe you should be held partially accountable? Isn’t the promotion of hatred against an identifiable group actually considered a crime against humanity by the UN?

I have admitted that it was my carelessness with respect to the cartoon that led me to post it in the first place. I truly had never seen earlier anti-semitic cartoons that apparently resemble this one, and regret the incident.
My intention was never to belittle the American people, but to challenge the double standards employed by the U.S. Government in calling for the criminal indictment of foreign leaders while securing their own impunity. My original understanding of the cartoon was along these lines, namely, that the blindfolded goddess of justice was being manipulated by the powerful USA.
