In Further Memory of Edward Said
Always, always
That voice
remains
is gone
needed
What he gave
we miss
we need
we want
Our loss
his loss
remains
an echo
Sunsets bright
that shine
yet soon
depart
Unlike waves
that beat
on shore
remains
Relentless
is loss
his gift
our hope
Remembering
our loss
our tears
his hopes
Honor such a loss
clear eyes
brave words
courage

A lovely poem in honor of a lovely intelligent person. My favorite of Said’s is “Out of Place,” his memoir, which my sister gave me. Before she had read it, she knew it would be good because she knew him as a fellow faculty member at Columbia. She was right. If only we could go back in time when things were gentler….
Beautiful poem and one that truly expresses our loss. Especially at times like now.
Thanks, John. Wishing you a HNY, and a fulfilling year in 2013. It would be
good if our paths were to cross once again.
Richard
I truly appreciate this remembrance. Like many people, I too was devasted by his premature departure. He was personally my all time favorite intellectual. He still is… Thank you Richard…
Thanks, Peri. Wishing you a HNY, and a satisfying year in 2013. R
Thanks, Richard. I had been looking for your promised reply to Atzmon’s post about your dismissal from the UN. But this paean to Said is lovely. He is worth remembering as a complete human being, and Barenboem keeps him alive with the East West Divine orchestra.
It`s all the more amazing to the must-be inner-conviction mankind has to have regarding fundamental values as decency and intellectual integrity to read your posts, to watch your political attitudes, and now to absorb the beauty of your poetical form of manifestation. Just a few have the inner conviction and outer courage for that.
Jeusaldo Correia:
I am moved by your words, generous beyond what I deserve, and deeply appreciated.
Wishing you the best for 2013!
Richard
All the best to you too. And no mistake about it, there is no flattery or arrière pensée… you do deserve it.
